Sending the attention into prayer can be difficult without some practice beforehand. With kids sending attention into prayer (and many "mundane" activities) varies greatly depending on time of day, energy level, and distraction tendency during the prayer. As adults, we don't always model best practices; are you looking at this post on your phone? I am glad you are here, but where is your attention and where is your kiddo's attention? :) It is good practice to take bite-size pieces of the present... but, how?
Here is material for practice! Children’s corner, by Debussy, is charming and light. There are many recordings! Here is just one option. Golliwogg’s Cake-walk is especially fun. You can find the entire album anywhere you stream (recorded by many different artists), and you can start small in the present with one piece at a time. Talk about it with your child and share, then, use that skill to listen to the quiet God gives you in nature, in your home, before bed. The skill of listening is the same regardless of the object. What you do with what you hear is up to you.
